“Whatever is destined not to happen will not happen, try as you may. Whatever is destined to happen will happen, do what you may to prevent it. This is certain. The best course, therefore, is to remain silent.”
~ Sri Ramana Maharshi
This quote is so heartbreakingly true. If you are watching a movie and you identify as the lead actor or actress who falls in love and then loses his/her love and possibly his/her life etc, then it would be fair to say life is tragic. However, if you take a step back and identify as the one watching the movie, rather than the actor in it, then life isn't so bad. After all its just a movie, right?! It is just a part we play, a costume we put on and take off again. Life goes on.
Once you identify with the truth of your being - Nonconceptual Consciousness (Spirit) being Undifferentiated Awareness (Soul) then life isn't so hard. Once you know your beingness as Spirit eternally being Soul, then what becomes of the mind and body is less significant and impactful. The death of one particular form is just seen as a blip in the expanse of one's eternity. It is simply another chapter in the never-ending love story that always starts with 'Once upon a time' and always ends 'Happily ever after' due to being in reality, the Alpha, and the Omega. We are eternal. Life is as Poe says, just a dream within a dream. Each ending is a new beginning. Spirit was never born; therefore, it can never die.
Life is sometimes our most favourite and least favourite genre. It’s sometimes a comedy, a drama, a horror, a thriller, sci fi or all of these at once. As life unfolds and our Consciousness expands into and as the truth of our Being, 'one man' over many lifetimes, as Shakespeare put it, 'will play many parts' At the end of the day, when the final curtain falls, no matter how wrapped up we are in our movie - in our dream or nightmare, we wake up as the Peace that passes all understanding - meaning this peace, the eternal truth of our Being is beyond the mind and body and is known and embraced when the mind and body are no more.
Or for the few lucid dreamers that realize the true Self while the movie is still running, that Peace that passes all understanding is known 'Now'. Allow a new plot twist to unfold in your movie: become a lucid dreamer too. If the movie does not change, at least your part in it will.
