Shadow work is counselling, or any kind of therapy or activity that gets us in touch with ourselves emotionally so that unconscious and repressed emotions, core beliefs and outworn habitual behaviours rise to the surface of our consciousness so that we are able to divinely reason them and let them go.
This gets the mind ready for mindfulness and meditation which require the mind to become increasingly still in its own silence. Only when thoughts and feelings are no longer robbing our attention are we able to become conscious of what is behind them - such as our true Self as Soul.
Remember when one meditates it is both minds - the conscious mind (thought) and the subconscious mind (emotions and habitual behaviour). Both must be engaged, becominh one in order to work in harmony and peace, acting as a channel or door for the Spiritual Realm of our Beingness.
